A Cub Scout Pack is a group of boys with adult leadership following the Cub Scout Program. The pack is divided into Dens with each Den consisting of 4-8 boys. Each Den is led by a Den Leader and one or more Assistant Den Leaders. Though these leaders have "day to day" responsibility, it is expected that each family take their turn in volunteering to host Den Meetings, help out during activities and in general do their share in helping the boys by sharing their experiences.
Parent Responsibility
Parental involvement is needed in many ways, among these are the following:
- Help their boy advance by working with them in completing the requirements for rank awards.
- Possibly host a Den Meeting.
- Provide assistance to the Den Leader as requested.
- Provide transportation to and from Den and Pack activities.
- Attend Den and Pack activities as much as possible.
The more the parent is involved, the more the boy will get out of Scouting.
Adult Volunteers
The success of the pack depends on dedicated adult leaders, adequate finances, and most importantly, parental involvement. With the exception of Tiger Cub dens, each den will sign-up to run at least one Pack activity during the year. Each year, the Den Leaders will sign-up their den for a Pack activity during the year. All parents in the den are expected to help run the assigned Pack activity. A list of Activity Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities is available and describes each of the activities and what the volunteers assigned to the activity should do.
In order to have a successful Cub Scout program it takes adults willing to be a member of the Pack Committee, Den Leaders and do their share helping out when needed. The leaders of today will soon be moving on with their sons into a Boy Scout Troop, so to keep the Pack from losing all of it's expertise, parents are encouraged to be involved early on in the program. Parents who invest the time will find it is well worth it.
Parents need not fear how to do the job. Training and support documentation has been developed and is readily available.
